Dive into the enigmatic world of pre-World War II Alexandria with Lawrence Durrell's captivating novel "Balthazar," the second installment of the renowned "The Alexandria Quartet." Set against the backdrop of the Mediterranean's eastern shores, Durrell revives the cosmopolitan and vibrant atmosphere of early 20th-century Egypt. This time, the narrative unfolds through a new lens, offering a different perspective on the tragic lives of the protagonist, his lovers, friends, and acquaintances.

The character Balthazar, a homosexual doctor and cabalist who also appears in the first book, enriches the protagonist's manuscript with insightful annotations. Faced with a dilemma, the protagonist must decide whether to publish his work in its original form or incorporate the revelations from Balthazar's comments. Unbeknownst to him, his beloved Justine had been involved with the writer Pursewarden, who committed suicide in the first volume. This twist leads to a web of questions: Was he or Pursewarden a decoy for Justine's husband, Nessim? Whose affections for Justine were more genuine? And who is Nessim truly? A jealous husband or a dangerous man capable of murder?

The story leaves readers in suspense, setting the stage for the continuation in the third book of the series, "Mountolive."

Lawrence Durrell (1912–1990), one of the 20th century's most celebrated British authors and the elder brother of naturalist Gerald Durrell, first captivated readers with "Justine," the initial volume of "The Alexandria Quartet," published in the 1950s. The Estonian edition of "Justine" was released by Eesti Raamat in 2016.
